Rotten & Water-Damaged Kitchen Sink Cabinet Repair

Is the bottom of your kitchen sink cabinet swollen, soft, sagging, or rotted from an old plumbing leak? In many cases, the damaged cabinet floor can be removed and rebuilt without replacing the entire cabinet.

I repair damaged kitchen sink base cabinets by removing deteriorated material, rebuilding the support underneath as needed, and installing a new cabinet bottom for a solid, clean finished repair.

This is a practical option for cabinets damaged by leaking drains, faucets, garbage disposals, supply lines, or other under-sink plumbing leaks.

Kitchen Sink Base Cabinet Floor Repair

Water damage under a kitchen sink doesn’t always mean the entire cabinet needs to be replaced. If the cabinet sides, face frame, and surrounding structure are still in usable condition, the damaged bottom can often be removed and rebuilt while leaving the existing cabinet and countertop in place.

I remove the swollen, deteriorated, or rotted cabinet floor and inspect the area underneath to determine what needs to be rebuilt. Depending on the condition of the cabinet, I can add new support framing and install a new cabinet bottom fitted around the existing plumbing and garbage disposal.

The finished repair provides a solid, usable cabinet floor again without the expense and disruption of replacing the entire sink base cabinet.

Repairing Rotten & Water-Damaged Cabinet Bottoms

Kitchen sink cabinet floors are especially vulnerable to water damage because even a small plumbing leak can go unnoticed for a long time. Leaks from the faucet supply lines, drain connections, garbage disposal, dishwasher connections, or other plumbing can cause particleboard and other cabinet materials to swell, soften, and eventually deteriorate.

Once the source of the leak has been corrected, I can remove the damaged cabinet bottom and rebuild the area as needed. Rather than simply covering the deteriorated material with another piece of wood, I remove the damaged material so the condition underneath can be evaluated before the new cabinet floor is installed.

This approach provides a cleaner, more substantial repair and helps restore the usable storage space underneath your kitchen sink.

When Can a Sink Base Cabinet Be Repaired?

A damaged sink base cabinet does not automatically mean the entire cabinet needs to be replaced. If the cabinet face frame, sides, doors, and countertop are still in good condition, it may be possible to remove the damaged bottom and rebuild the cabinet from inside.

I look at how far the water damage has spread, the condition of the surrounding cabinet material, and whether there is enough sound structure remaining to support a new cabinet floor.

If the damage is primarily confined to the bottom of the cabinet, repairing it can often be a practical alternative to removing the countertop and replacing the entire sink base cabinet.

How I Rebuild a Damaged Sink Base Cabinet

Once the damaged cabinet bottom has been removed, I evaluate what remains underneath and rebuild the support structure as needed. The goal is to create a solid foundation for the new cabinet floor rather than simply laying new material over damaged particleboard.

New support framing can be added inside the cabinet to support the replacement floor while working around the existing plumbing, garbage disposal, and other components beneath the sink.

I then cut and fit a new cabinet bottom around the plumbing and cabinet structure. The new surface can be finished and painted to provide a clean, durable, usable space under the sink.

Rebuilding the Cabinet From the Inside

Removing the damaged cabinet bottom makes it possible to see the condition underneath and determine what needs to be rebuilt.

For this project, the deteriorated material was removed and new wood support framing was installed inside the existing cabinet. A new cabinet floor was then cut and fitted around the plumbing and other components under the sink.

This allowed the damaged area to be rebuilt while keeping the existing cabinet, countertop, sink, and doors in place.

Have Water Damage Under Your Kitchen Sink?

If the bottom of your kitchen sink cabinet is swollen, soft, sagging, or falling apart, send me a few photos of the damaged area. I can usually get a good idea of the extent of the damage and whether the cabinet may be a good candidate for repair.

Before the cabinet is repaired, the source of the water leak should be identified and corrected. Once the area is dry and the leak is no longer active, I can remove the damaged material and determine what is needed to rebuild the cabinet bottom.

In many cases, the existing cabinet can be saved without removing the countertop, sink, or entire cabinet.
